Today 24th July 2019. The San Sebastian opens its 54th annual Jazz Festival, that will last for five days with some 100 performances over 15 stages, with most of them free.

So many legendary musicians have graced these stages; far too many to name. Today’s main attractions will be Joan Baez and Jamie Cullum. Joan Baez  has been entertaining for over 60 years and still brings a certain calm spirituality to the stage. Last year was supposed to be her swansong year, but we are very lucky she has decided to give us another year. 
Jamie brings his youthful energetic style of piano playing that won’t disappoint.

Further artist who will grace these stages this year, just to name a few, will be Diana Krall, John Zorn, Maria Schneider, Neneh Cherry, Joe Jackson, Joshua Redman. They are some of the top billing this year.

This festival is known for recognising and handing out awards to the very talented jazz musicians. This year John Zorn will receive the Donostiako Jazzaldia 2019 Award.
John Zorn is a modern saxophonist and composer, who has collaborated with other musicians to create an improvised version of modern jazz.

In the past this prestigious award received by great musicians such as Hank Jones, Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, Kenny Barron, Ray Brown, Wayne Shorter, Ellis Marsalis.

San Sebastian, over the period of the annual jazz festival attracts close to 200,000 participants. This brings a kind of energy that must be experienced at some point in your life. This beautiful city is first class and should be visited whether during or outside the festival. The dining and culinary experience will bound you to return time and time again. Once smitten and you will be hooked for good.
